"Aqua Pups: Pups Save the Reef" is the first segment of the 20th episode in Season 9 of PAW Patrol.

Summary

The Aqua Pups rescue Coral, Moby and McSquidly from a submarine before it crashes into a delicate reef.

Synopsis

In the bay, Coral, along with a few of her sea friends, smile for a photo with Cap'n Turbot outside of an old, sunken science submarine. However, as the two swap places with each other for their next photo, Cap'n Turbot places his hand against the sub, causing it to wobble dangerously off the edge of a cliff near Deep Reef Trench, a coral reef home to many different kinds of fish. To avoid any other possible risks with the sub, Coral and Cap'n Turbot decide to take their photos elsewhere, unaware of Moby and McSquidly hiding atop the sub's hatch. Once the other two are out of sight, Moby takes the opportunity to search the sub for spare parts to add to his vehicle with McSquidly.

While the PAW Patrol are taking photos on the beach, Coral and Cap'n Turbot finish their photo session before parting ways. However, as Coral swims past the sub, she hears noises coming from within it and curiously swims over to the top. On Moby's command, McSquidly keeps watch via the sub's telescope, quickly spotting Coral. He pulls Moby away from his search to look through the telescope as well, but Coral has already entered sub and startles Moby on accident. The impact of his jump causes the sub to wobble, forcing the hatch shut and locking Coral, Moby and McSquidly inside. Moby and McSquidly try to reopen the hatch, but their struggles only cause the sub to lean closer towards the trench. Worried about sub crashing into the reef with her, Moby and McSquidly still in it, Coral calls the PAW Patrol for help.

As the PAW Patrol take a silly photo, Ryder receives Coral's call. Once he learns of the situation with the sub from her, he summons the PAW Patrol to the PAW Patroller before it takes off the pier, transforming into the Whale Patroller and suiting the pups in their Aqua Pups gear. After their mission briefing, he assigns Rubble to use his grabber to open the sub's hatch and Zuma to use his lobster claws to pull the sub away from the trench. With that, the team deploys with Rubble and Zuma sliding down into their respective vehicles and set off with Ryder to the trench.

As Coral reassures McSquidly of the Aqua Pups coming to their rescue, Moby spots a can lodged within the sub's pipes and tries to pull it out, but his grabber claw gets stuck. Once the Aqua Pups arrive, Rubble uses his grabber to open the hatch, but accidentally breaks it off. Fortunately, Zuma, using his sonar, is able to find another hatch that is blocked by a rock, which Rubble moves aside using his grabber again. As Coral exits the sub, Moby fibs about following after her and, with a frustrated McSquidly, continues to try to pull the can out. As Coral thanks Ryder for saving them, the team realizes Moby, who finally pulls the can out, is still in the sub as it wobbles off the edge, sliding directly towards the reef. Rubble, along with his Hammerhead buddy, head towards the bottom of the trench where he uses his rig's hammerhead blade to keep the sub from colliding into the reef. Though the sub is no longer sinking, Rubble's rig gets stuck between the bottom of the reef and the sub and is unable to push it back up, so Ryder calls the rest of the Aqua Pups for backup.

After Robo-Dog deploys the Whale Patroller's tethers, Coral calls out to their sea friends to function as smaller rides. Once their friends arrive, every pup, excluding Coral and Rocky, grab a tether and attach it to the sinking sub. However, just as they finish, the sub starts to push against Rubble's rig towards the reef. Coral tries to lift his rig with her Seahorse buddy, but she is not strong enough, so Rubble rides atop his Hammerhead buddy and uses their wide head to push his rig out of the way, setting it in autopilot mode and sending it back to the surface. With the sub now secure, Ryder commands Robo-Dog to lift the sinking sub out of the trench. However, on its way up, a bunch of rocks come crashing down towards the reef. Using her bubble launcher, Coral fires a bunch of bubbles to catch the rocks, which Zuma, using his Lobster buddy, pops once they are near the ground and away from the reef.

After Robo-Dog pulls and sets the sub far away from the trench, Moby finally exits the sub with what he thought was a cool part for his ship, but discovers it is actually a can of fish food instead. Disappointed, Moby gives the can to Ryder, who places the food in Chase's launcher to feed and thank their sea friends for their help. As they eat, Coral thanks the Aqua Pups for saving the reef while McSquidly offers fish food to Moby, who declines with disgust.
